RC filter or RC snubber? Transformer and reactor protection

Some systems informally called RC filters are actually RC snubbers intended to damp high-frequency switching events. NEPSI presents these under transformer surge protection.

Transformer applications

NEPSI identifies transformers with primary vacuum or SF6 breakers and short cable or bus connections as relevant applications. The RC branch helps reduce transient voltage magnitude and rate of rise. This differs from choosing a small-signal filter cutoff.

Shunt reactor switching

NEPSI’s reactor specification calls for RC snubbers where needed to limit high transient recovery voltage and protect against restrike and reignition. It does not prescribe one identical RC branch for every reactor.

RC branches and other protection

The product documentation discusses resistors, capacitors, fuses, suitable surge arresters and monitoring options. These have different roles. Selection requires voltage, grounding, breaker and protected-equipment data.
