RC snubber circuits: an approach to damping ringing

High-frequency ringing after a switching edge can result from parasitic inductance and capacitance. An RC snubber is one way to damp the energy of this oscillation.

What does a snubber do?

A series resistor-capacitor branch is placed between suitable circuit nodes. The capacitor provides a path for high-frequency transient current, while the resistor dissipates energy as heat. The aim is to reduce voltage stress and emissions at the associated frequencies.

Why there is no universal R and C

Ringing frequency and amplitude depend on the switching node’s parasitic values. TI application notes begin with measuring the existing ringing and assessing the parasitic circuit. Values copied from another board do not guarantee the same performance.

Damping has a loss tradeoff

Charging and discharging the capacitor each cycle introduces losses. For a simple full-swing circuit, C × V² × f indicates the scale of the loss; the actual coefficient and distribution depend on topology. Resistor selection must consider pulse energy and temperature as well as average power.

Layout and verification

Long connections add parasitic inductance. Place the snubber close to its relevant switching loop. Evaluate waveforms, component temperature and losses across different loads and input voltages before finalizing the design.

This is a power-electronics design framework. A medium-voltage transformer snubber cannot be designed by simply scaling up a small converter’s RC branch.
